WFTV Reports on Florida’s Entertainment Tax Incentives (and lack thereof)

ICS Producer, Jen Vargas, was invited to be part of this critical conversation last Saturday with WFTV reporter Tim Barber. Also interviewed for this piece was Sheena Fowler, our current Metro Orlando Film Commission President.

We’re curious, filmmakers. A bunch of questions:

  • How many of you make your living in Florida?
  • How many of you make your living outside of the state?
  • What about Florida makes it so desirable for you to stay, or so undesirable that you’re thinking of moving away permanently?
  • How important is it to you to STAY based in Florida?
  • What are YOU personally doing to raise awareness and start a conversation of this situation with your peers?
  • Do you even care to? (WE CERTAINLY HOPE SO! This effects ALL OF US!)

Please feel free to answer below in the comments section or on our Facebook page! Check out WFTV’s full report below…

Open Call: Chicken & Egg Pictures

If you are a female nonfiction filmmaker, New York and San Francisco based Chicken and Egg Pictures is looking for YOU this summer! Their 9th Annual Open Call for female filmmakers is underway! If you have a cause close to your heart, whether it be; the environment, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Education, Music, Healthcare, Community, Human Rights, the Chicken & Egg folks are interested to hear your story! You can even submit an issue not on their list of 20+ themes! The first deadline for LOIs (Letter of Intent) is July 1, 2013. Interested Florida Femmes de Film? Read more below…

Chicken & Egg Pictures is dedicated to supporting women nonfiction filmmakers whose diverse voices and dynamic storytelling have the power to catalyze change at home and around the globe. Since its founding in 2005, Chicken & Egg Pictures has provided more than $2.8 million in financial support for women filmmakers and over 4,500 hours of dynamic mentorship focused on story, craft, and community engagement.

Chicken & Egg Pictures does not have an endowment. We actively raise all funds to provide grants and deliver mentorship directly to filmmakers. This year (for the first time ever) there will be a processing fee required to apply for a grant. Every application is reviewed by a panel of at least 10 expert screeners who insure that every project is looked at thoroughly, fairly, and with multiple perspectives. We believe that it is critically important to have a rigorous review process.

To help offset hard costs given the high number of applications, a processing fee is necessary in order to maintain this caliber of expertise.

2013 Application Fees:

  • First deadline on July 1st: $20
  • Last deadline on July 15th: $35

Before filling out this application — please make sure you refer to our GuidelinesFAQs & Application Checklist, and Steps Before Applying.

Florida Film Festival 2013 Special Edition

We were had to take a short break after spending 10 days at the Florida Film Festival. It kicked our butts! The fruits of our labor aired tonight on VISION/Orange TV locally. For those of you outside of Orange County, heck, even out of the state, country and even planet? (Ground control to ISS…), here is Season Three: Episode Eight of Indie Cinema Showcase featuring the Florida Film Festival!

Special thanks to those who came out and lent a hand, mic and/or camera; Kate RamseyPeter Hoang, Samantha Laine, TL Westgate and Darwin Godbout. Huge thanks to everyone at the Florida Film Festival, particularly Enzian Theater; Jen Guhl, Shannon Jones, Joshua Martin, Matthew Curtis, Phillip and Sig Tiedtke.

Shout Outs and Thank Yous also go out to the following who took the time to speak with us for this show:

Our show would be nothing without our ICS Field Team; Christina Carmona, Nando Torres, Jay De Los Santos and honorary ICSFT member, ‘Dangerous’ Dave Kuskie. Thank you to our Producers Gerald Godbout, Allan Marrero and Jen Vargas (yes, I just thanked myself) for keeping us motivated and moving forward!

Orlando discussion and screening of “Miss Representation” this Wednesday

Taking the place of this month’s WIFT Wednesdays, presented by Women in Film and Television Florida, is a special screening of the documentary film Miss Representation. While not a Florida made film, its message is universal. Writer, Producer and Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls while exposing how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. Well known women Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson, Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric and legendary activist Gloria Steinem share their stories throughout the film.

The showing will begin at 6:00pm at Urban ReThink, with a discussion afterward (courtesy of  FemCity Orlando and WIFT-FL) will be moderated by friend of the show and Duchess of Orlando, Colleen Burns of Yelp Orlando. Tickets for this screening are $10 for non-members, $5 for members of either WIFT or FemCity and may be purchased here

This screening is sponsored by: Trusted Source Consulting, LLC, Inner Scientist, Balance Orlando, LIVD and Produced, ProductionHUB, IDEAS Orlando/Carolyn Petagno and Thirty-One Gifts.
