Late Night Writers Workshop (NYC)

Okay, so this unfortunately does NOT take place in Florida, however, it was too cool for me not to share. You don’t have to be based in New York City to participate but you will have to attend the workshop in the Big Apple.

Some of you (sadly) commute for work. Some of you are Improv folk, some of you are comedy sketch folk. Some of you are just great writers! This workshop is an excellent opportunity to fine tune your voice. (I hope AJ Nickell is reading this!)

Here’s Your Big Break

The two-day, NYC-based workshop will consist of improv classes as well as keynote speakers. The selected writers will create new sketch material and gain insight into the dynamics of a Late Night writers’ room as well as learn about NBCUniversal’s Late Night line-up. Participants are given the chance to interact with key writers and producers from across NBCUniversal’s Late Night shows as well as receive feedback on their material. Writing assignments on an NBCUniversal Late Night television show may be available after successful completion of the program but are not a guarantee.

Application Requirements

1. Applicants must submit ALL of the following pieces in one properly formatted “sketch” packet:

  1. 1-2 pages of monologue jokes (a la Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) for one or several characters/host personalities
  2. 1-2 pages of headline news/ topical jokes (a la Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update”)
  3. 2  sketches (no more than 5 pages EACH). These sketches should be character based and at least one should be a “correspondent” or “pre-taped” sketch (Examples: Jimmy Fallon’s “Thank-You Notes” or Jay Leno’s “Ross the Intern”)

This packet must be submitted as ONE PDF file.

2. Applicants must complete the Late Night Writers Workshop application. Please upload the sketch packet  in the application form. Link to be posted during 2013 application period.

3. Applicants must fill out a release form for their submitted packet. Upload form in online application.

4. Applicants must be able to provide their own housing and transportation in the New York City area for the duration of the program weekend. (NOTE: You do not need to be based in New York City to be considered.)

July 15, 2013 – August 16, 2013 (3pm PST deadline) – Submission Period

September 2013 – Finalists interviews / selection

October 4 and 5, 2013 – Workshop in New York City

All dates other than the submission period are subject to change.

48 Hour Film Project Orlando: Aug 23-25, 2013

It’s back! The 48 Hour Film Project Orlando makes its way back to Orlando in time to close a very humid summer. This will be the 6th year for ‘The 48,” and if it’s anything like those in years past, it will also be a HOT one! Details from Producer, Rob Ward;

“From August 23-25, 2013, hundreds of Central Floridians will spend a wild, sleepless weekend creating short films at breakneck speed as part of a global competition that is equal parts The Amazing Race, American Idol, and Tough Mudder.   Fueled by imagination, ingenuity, and energy drinks, filmmakers will compete for the chance to win a $5,000 grand prize and the opportunity to screen their mini-masterpiece at the Cannes International Film Festival’s Short Film Corner in 2014.

Here’s how it works: At the Orlando Kick-Off Event on Friday, August 23, each team registered will receive a movie genre, character, prop, and line of dialogue that must be incorporated into their film. The teams then have 48 hours to write, direct and shoot their film, which must be submitted on Sunday, August 25th at the Drop-Off Event to qualify. Films submitted even one minute late are disqualified.”

The only ‘pre-production’ (loosely used) a team is allowed to do in this competition is to line up talent, crew, gear and locations. The rest of the elements, as Rob mentioned above, are assigned at the Kick Off Event on Friday, August 23rd. Think you have the chops to make a movie in 48 Hours? The first of TEN Meet and Greet events starts TOMORROW!

As of this writing, 7 teams have already joined this year’s 48. Sign up soon… spots fill quickly!

Meet and Greet Dates (Dates hyperlinked to Facebook Event Page, venues linked to company website)

  1. Tuesday, July 16, 4-7pm at Eternal Tap (Downtown Orlando)
  2. Friday, July 19, 4-7pm at Twin Peaks (International Drive)
  3. Tuesday, July 23, 4-7pm at Eternal Tap
  4. Friday, July 26, 4-7pm at University Orlando Ale House (Near Full Sail)
  5. Tuesday, July 30, 4-7pm at Eternal Tap
  6. Friday, August 2, 4-7pm at Cue-Phoria Billiards and Cafe (Semoran & Aloma)
  7. Tuesday, August 6, 4-7pm at Eternal Tap
  8. Friday, August 9, 4-7pm at Cue-Phoria Billiards and Cafe
  9. Tuesday, August 13, 4-7pm at Eternal Tap  <—Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday!
  10. Friday, August 16, 4-7pm at Cue-Phoria Billiards and Cafe

Full Disclosure: Members of our ICS staff will be joining a team this year but we are in no way associated with the planning, judging or logistics of this event. We are simply letting you, our filmmakers, know that it’s happening. (I personally have participated in all six 48 Hour Fests here in Orlando!)

Round 2 of Moviemaker’s 25 Coolest Include Three More Florida Fests

We first told you about MovieMaker Magazine‘s 25 Coolest Film Festivals voting last week in Round One, where two Florida based film festivals were in the running; Pool 1Orlando Film Festival (October 16-20, 2013) and Pool 2Sarasota Film Festival (April 4-13, 2014).

In the Second Round of nominees, three more Florida fests have been nominated; Pool 16: Miami International Film Festival (March 7-16, 2014), Pool 18: Key West Film Festival (November 13-17), and in Pool 19 (my personal favorite): Florida Film Festival (April 4-13, 2014)!

There are many pools in which to vote with such notable fests as Slamdance, Tribeca, Sundance and Austin. Friend of the show, Florida Film Festival, was both nominated and won in 2010. Will 2013 be the year Florida festivals DOMINATE MovieMaker’s 25 Coolest Fests? We hope so! Take our poll below…

Good luck to all the Florida fests nominated!

Hollywood Meets Bollywood via Florida in 2014

For the first time in their history, the International Indian Film Academy will debut the 15th Annual Tata Motors IIFA Awards in the United States. What makes this event even more exciting is the fact that the glamour of the GREEN CARPET will be coming to Tampa Bay! According to the official announcement (below) the awards show boasts 800 million viewers globally, in over 110 countries and is anticipated to bring valuable impact to the area. (JenSideNote: I LOVE how active the IIFA is on Social Media!! Facebook, TwitterMirror, Google+ Hangouts, YouTube… awesome!)

Only time will tell the actual numbers of its impact however, Mike Salinero of the Tampa Tribune writes, “The International Indian Film Academy awards ceremony is expected to draw 30,000 visitors to the Tampa area next June and create $100 million in economic impact.” Instrumental in bringing the awards to Tampa and also quoted in Salinero’s story, businessman Chetan “Jason” R. Shah says, “This is a major, major attraction that’s going to boost the economy like anything.” We at ICS hope so. You’ve already seen ICS on the Red Carpet and the Blue Carpet… maybe the Green Carpet is in our future?

If Florida hosted more big (film) industry events like this – domestic and international – MAYBE it would capture Governor Rick Scott’s attention enough to see the value of investing in our film industry in Florida… one can only hope.

~ 15th IIFA Weekend & Awards to bring Indian Cinema’s biggest stars to Tampa Bay, Florida ~

6th July 2013, Saturday, Macau – As the 14th Videocon d2h IIFA Weekend comes to a close at The Venetian Macao, the 2013 Official Destination Host Partner, IIFA has already selected a host venue for next year’s celebration. Slated to make its debut in the United States, IIFA will host the 15th year of the Tata Motors IIFA Awards in Tampa Bay, Florida next year.

Andre Timmins, Director – IIFA & Wizcraft International said, “We are extremely pleased to announce that the 15th annual edition of the Videocon d2h IIFA Weekend and the Tata Motors IIFA Awards will be held in Tampa Bay, Florida in 2014. IIFA has been known to take Indian Cinema on a global journey and we are excited to make our US debut. We chose Tampa Bay for the infrastructure, strong Asian community and the immense support we have received.”

With world-class infrastructure and facilities and having hosted myriad international concerts, events and the Super Bowl four times over, Tampa Bay is the ideal choice for the 15th IIFA Weekend & Awards. The Bay Area comprises Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater, collectively referred to as Tampa Bay. With over 1.5 million Indians and fans of Indian cinema living in the States today, come June 2014 the shores will see a large number of Indian celebrities, delegates, throngs of international media and fans from around the world.

The events of the IIFA Weekend are expected to boost tourism in the host region Tampa Bay by over 25% and attract 50,000 extra visitors from the world-over. The event will be broadcast globally reaching nearly 800 million viewers in over 110 countries.

The International Indian Film Academy, conceptualized and produced by Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. is supported by the key members of the Indian film fraternity. IIFA is the most respected South Asian film academy and its main highlight, the IIFA Awards is India’s biggest media event.

From a one night celebration in 2000 at the Millennium Dome, London, the last 14 years have seen the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) movement grow into a cine-packed weekend of film-festivals, workshops, premieres, exhibitions, film-showcases, global business forums and sporting events, all of which climaxes into the Tata Motors IIFA Awards. The IIFAs have been previously celebrated in London, South Africa, Toronto, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Amsterdam & Thailand, among other countries.

This weekend, IIFA celebrated its 14th anniversary in The Venetian® Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau, China.
