Starlite Micro-Budget Film Festival 2013

The 2nd Annual Starlite Film Festival begins TODAY, January 31st, and continues through Saturday, February 2nd. Starlite Film Fest, according to their Facebook page, “was named after the Star-Lite Drive-In movie theater in Winter Garden that was in operation from 1949 to 1996.” Sadly it was demolished in 1998. There’s even a five-part documentary by local director Heather Lea Gerdes about the Star-Lite Drive In on its YouTube page. Starlite Film Fest can’t replace this historic drive-in of course, but I can’t think of a more respectful way to carry on its legacy than with this film festival.

All films screened this weekend were all made with budgets under $200,000. While those of us who are zero budget may think this is a ton of money, it really isn’t considering all the tent pole movies studios have open wallets for… and even those can be hard to finance! What’s great about Starlite is it’s a totally laid back atmosphere in the lovely town of Winter Garden. All the films are in one place, and all the parties and panels are within walking distance of the gorgeous Garden Theatre!

Speaking of panels, our Field Producer Jen Vargas (I feel slightly insane typing in 3rd person), was invited to speak on Starlite’s Social Media Panel! This panel will discuss the underestimated and often misunderstood role of social media when marketing a micro-budget film. Filmmakers will discuss the social media strategies they have used, and how to effectively reach your desired audience. Among the panelists are IDEAS Orlando President, John Lux, representatives from ProductionHUB and more! All the panels are FREE, so if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by! Our ICS Team will also be on hand throughout the weekend checking out films too.
